The Short Game Around the Greens

The short game around the greens is the part of golf I enjoy the most, and it’s the one I teach with the greatest pleasure and effectiveness. It’s also the aspect that brings the most points on the scorecard and the fastest enjoyment. There’s nothing more satisfying than saving a par or making a birdie by sinking an approach shot using the right technique to maximize this part of the game.

I’m especially convinced of this when I see what beginners are capable of after just a few practice sessions, compared to self-taught golfers who have been playing for 15 years but still struggle with the contact on a lofted approach from tight or soft lies.

Having done this hundreds of times, I can teach you how to use a sand wedge properly in just a few hours (or even just one hour for the most talented). Learning around the green with this club is particularly rewarding as it helps reduce tension and improve coordination between the body, arms, and hands.

What’s more, the satisfaction of achieving clean contact with a sand wedge and seeing your ball rise creates a positive momentum. This motivation makes you want to keep practicing. Progress around the greens then follows naturally and rapidly!

We’ll also use the same principles as with lofted approaches to learn bunker shots.

Finally, and this may surprise you, the most important thing for improving your scores around the green isn’t necessarily the sand wedge itself. We’ll also learn how to choose the right club for the right situation, making each shot as simple as possible.

After all, on the course, the goal is to succeed on the first attempt!

Driving and Tee Shots

  • Learning to strike balls off a tee,
  • Proper use of the driver,
  • Fixing a slice,
  • Mastering a draw,
  • Learning to shape shots on demand,
  • Increasing distance,
  • Improving clubhead speed,
  • Strategy: hitting more fairways on the course,
  • Mechanics, posture, grip, and tension management.

Improving your tee shots and ball striking off the tee is crucial if your goal is to beat your friends or achieve better scores in competitions. This area of the game offers various aspects we can work on together, usually using a driver. The most exciting and popular goal for most golfers is increasing distance!

To hit longer drives, we can focus on three key elements:

  1. Centering the ball at impact,
  2. Increasing acceleration,
  3. Reducing tension that slows down your swing.

It’s not uncommon for golfers with a handicap above 20 to gain 20 to 30 meters of distance after targeted practice.

But that’s not all. You can also learn to create controlled shot shapes. Isn’t it incredibly satisfying to see your ball follow the curve you intended, perfectly navigating a dogleg on the course?

Driving lends itself well to this skill because the further you hit, the more the ball’s spin and shape (draw, hook, slice, fade) become apparent.

Putting: The Key to Lower Scores

  • Eliminating three-putts or worse,
  • Improving or learning speed control,
  • Perfecting ball direction at impact,
  • Slope reading (visual cues, AimPoint, putting zones, or your own method),
  • Developing intention, focus, routine, posture, and stroke.

From one perspective, putting is the most important part of the game! Of course, you also need solid skills in other areas to score well.

However, if you can’t sink the ball in less than three putts or miss putts within a meter of the hole, scoring becomes impossible. This often leads to frustration and loss of focus on the course.

And as you’ve likely experienced, the less you concentrate, the worse it gets. The worse it gets, the harder it becomes to focus, creating a vicious cycle.

Together, we’ll pinpoint exactly which of the three main areas of improvement you should prioritize:

Is it your speed control?

Your aim and direction?

Reading slopes, or perhaps a combination of these factors?

In my approach, mastering speed control for putts within 10 meters is critical. I’ll guide you in developing the key skills that will not only make putting enjoyable but also give you clear and achievable training goals.

If you know how to practice effectively and enjoy the process, you’ll start sinking more putts on the course!

Wedging: Precision and Scoring

  • Improving ball contact,
  • Eliminating fat and thin shots,
  • Enhancing distance management and control.

Wedging is a crucial skill, especially for scoring below a handicap of 6. However, even golfers with a handicap around 40 need a solid foundation in this area, as it becomes challenging to score if you consistently hit thin or fat shots within 80 meters.

What makes wedging particularly fascinating from a teaching perspective is that it’s played at a low intensity. This lower intensity is perfect for receiving feedback about your swing mechanics. Feedback is essential for making meaningful changes, and this practice environment helps refine swing mechanics and develop a more precise acceleration through the ball.

For advanced players, we focus on managing distance control to within a few meters and adjusting spin rates (the number of backward revolutions per minute of the ball).

The Full Swing: Mastery and consistency

  1. Ball Contact:

Minimize fat (chunky) and thin (topped) shots.

Achieve consistent, clean strikes for improved confidence.

  1. Increase Distance:

Optimize swing mechanics and clubhead speed to gain more yardage.

  1. Correct Directional Issues:

Fix common problems such as push, pull, slice, and hook.

Develop a reliable, repeatable swing path.

  1. Learn Specialty Shots:

Low shots for windy conditions,

High shots to carry hazards,

Punch shots to escape trouble,

Re-centering techniques to recover from poor lies,

Driver and fairway wood shots without a tee for versatility.

The swing is the foundation of every golfer’s game, and refining it can unlock significant improvements in performance and enjoyment.

Why It Matters:

Mastering the swing allows you to adapt to any situation on the course. Together, we’ll build a swing that’s efficient, powerful, and adaptable, ensuring you have the tools to handle every challenge the course presents.

The Mental Game: Unlocking Your Potential

  1. Creating a Personalized Routine:

Develop a pre-shot routine that enhances focus and increases shot success rates.

  1. Personalized Coaching:

Tailored mental coaching that targets specific challenges and optimizes performance.

  1. Turning Failure into Opportunity:

Learn to embrace mistakes as learning experiences, helping you improve rather than feel discouraged.

  1. Changing Your Perspective on Feedback:

Develop a new approach to how you view feedback during your rounds, turning it into a tool for growth.

  1. Staying Present and Focused:

Master concentration techniques to stay calm and perform under pressure, even in tough moments.

  1. Metacognition (Thinking About Your Thoughts):

Explore how awareness of your thought patterns can improve your mental approach to the game.

The mental aspect is the glue that ties everything together and ensures your golf game reaches its full potential.

The mental game is often the difference between striking perfect shots at the practice range and struggling with nerves or poor decisions on the course.

Perhaps you hit flawless shots during practice but struggle to keep the ball on the fairway when it counts.

Maybe when you’re playing well and on track for a low score, performance anxiety creeps in, and you implode on the back nine.

Or perhaps you feel the pressure and tension when facing a short putt, even though it’s only a few inches from the hole.

In reality, mental strength, technique, strategy, and experience are all interconnected.

In my approach, mental coaching is entirely personalized, based on specific situations identified on the course. It may also involve addressing mental blocks that hinder the learning of new skills or the improvement of existing ones.

More than in any other area of the game, the mental aspect is about the individual’s personal journey. The teacher can guide, but ultimately, the student is the one who must do the work when they’re ready, and at the right moment for them.

Teaching and Pedagogy: Effective Learning for Golf Improvement

  1. Learning to Collect Feedback:

Develop the skill of analyzing your performance, using feedback from your body, the ball’s flight, and course conditions to make adjustments and improve your game.

  1. Training Independently to Maximize Progress:

Learn how to create your own training routine, practice efficiently, and self-assess your performance to accelerate learning and improvement.

  1. Introducing Friends to Golf with Simple Concepts:

Teach newcomers to the game with straightforward, easy-to-understand concepts that foster their progress and enjoyment. Focus on building a solid foundation that encourages confidence and fun.

In golf, as in any skill, effective learning and teaching methods are essential for long-term success. By mastering feedback collection and training strategies, you can create an environment where you continuously progress, while helping others to enjoy and improve their game as well.

On-Course Coaching: Real-World Performance and Strategy

  1. Analyze and Identify Key Elements Impacting Your Scorecard:

Together, we’ll pinpoint the factors affecting your performance on the course and use them to create a solid foundation for improving your scores.

  1. Strategy:

Learn how to select the right areas of the course to target based on your skill level and score goals. Understanding course strategy is just as important as executing shots.

  1. Apply Training Concepts on the Course:

Put into practice the skills and techniques we’ve worked on during training sessions. Experiencing real-time adjustments will make your practice more effective.

  1. Share Experiences in Real-World Situations:

I’ll offer insights based on my experiences and help you apply lessons learned directly to the challenges you face during a round.

  1. Performance Exercise:

Challenge yourself to “beat the pro” in a live match, testing your skills in a competitive environment.

On-course coaching is the most underutilized yet crucial service for golfers who compete regularly. A feedback session on the course, where we analyze your real-time decisions and shots, can never be fully replaced by a productive practice session.

Still skeptical? Try this test!

Film some of your swings on the course and compare them to the ones you make during a practice session with a bucket of balls. You’ll likely notice significant differences in focus, technique, and decision-making under pressure.

Learning how to select the right target area, club, and necessary technical adjustments based on the lie of the ball are just a few examples of the invaluable experience you can gain by playing on the course.

We can identify alignment errors, problems in your pre-shot routine, and distractions that affect your performance. Additionally, we’ll address any course-related fears or mental blocks that cause you to miss shots that you would never miss at the practice range.

Embracing failure, staying in the game, playing shot by shot, and counting the score at the end are all part of the mental framework we’ll develop during a personalized on-course session.

For more experienced players looking for a challenge, you can also face off against me in a match and attempt to beat the pro. Currently, my handicap is around +1, but watch out—I’m aiming for +2 in 2025!
