Continuing to Learn Golf Once You're Beyond Beginner Level
You’re in the process of learning golf. You’ve moved past the beginner stage but aren’t yet an advanced player. At this stage, intermediate-level golf lessons are perfect for you.
The goal now is to refine your skills while working on more technical aspects like accuracy, consistency, and game strategy. Personalized lessons will help you perfect your swing, manage more complex courses, and improve your approach shots and putting.
This training should help you progress efficiently and gain confidence in your abilities.
Learning Golf at an Intermediate Level: How to Perfect Your Game
Learning golf at an intermediate level requires a structured approach to perfect your swing, improve accuracy, and master course strategies. By refining advanced techniques, players can transform their game and gain confidence on the course.
Teaching Golf: Key Skills to Master
To truly own this intermediate level, you must acquire some essential elements in your golf skill set.
Up until now, most players have focused primarily on increasing their clubhead speed to hit their 9-iron more than 120 meters. The driver might reach 200 meters but with significant dispersion. And often, the slice remains prevalent in missed shots.
To reach this level, a self-taught player (or one with limited guidance from a golf instructor) will have developed a set of compensations, beliefs, and ideas that are partially or completely incorrect. These will, at some point, hinder their progress and make it difficult to advance further.
Here are some essential elements that can no longer be overlooked when you want to learn golf and move past the intermediate level:
- A consistent posture
- A clear intention for the ball’s trajectory
- The ability to take feedback from the flight of the ball in order to deduce how the club shaft and head function in the impact zone.
In another area, putting distance control must also be mastered at this stage. This will open the door to more in-depth work that experienced golfers do in reading slopes.
This is also a crucial time in golf instruction to focus closely on:
- The entire game around the greens,
- The use of the sand wedge in various challenging situations (clearing an obstacle, bunkers, rough).

After a lackluster 2022 season, I really needed to get help from a pro.
I was lucky enough to meet Julien who managed to get my driving back in place which was a very weak point in my game.
I continued to work with him on the rest during the winter, and the result is conclusive.
Today I’m playing my best game ever.
Many thanks, and see you soon.

Improving in Golf: How to Refine Your Game and Reduce Mistakes
You’re playing between a +18 and +30 handicap on an 18-hole golf course. You can score some excellent holes and string together pars, but then you might completely blow up your scorecard on four holes, often toward the end of the round, though not always.
One day, your putting is flawless, and the next, you’re making three-putts in a row. This is normal, and it’s now the time to improve your golf game and refine your skills!
To move past this level, many players will find it useful to hit the ball with less force. By overhitting their shots, intermediate players can sometimes hit short irons (PW, 9-iron, 8-iron) as far as an advanced player.
It takes time to realize that this over-speed actually costs precision and results in many mishits.
For others, learning to accelerate and loosen up a little more will help them score lower and make small errors in ball contact more tolerable.
In martial arts, it’s often said that speed is a “cover-up” for other flaws. However, speed also helps get the ball airborne!
Course strategy might be the biggest factor costing players between a +18 and +30 handicap the most points. A common mistake for many players is to base their game on a shot they successfully made once. In reality, 9 times out of 10 (at best), the ball will fly 15 meters shorter, and often the contact won’t be solid.
To Improve in Golf, You Often Need to Hit Less Hard and Have a Clear, Lucid Strategy on the Course
Learning Golf at the Intermediate Level with Julien Simon, Experienced Golf Instructor
Today, all sorts of technical content are available, and you can end up hearing conflicting advice about the game and the golf swing.
I’m not suggesting that half of what we hear is wrong. Simply, as the saying goes, what works as a remedy for one person can be poison for another. A single piece of advice that works well for someone at a given moment can throw another person’s game into chaos.
This is where the help of a qualified professional becomes invaluable:
- A golf instructor you trust,
- Who helps you focus directly on what matters,
- Who prevents you from getting lost, as many do, in the complexities of the game.
Relevant, simple, and personalized advice is the key to your rapid progress in learning golf.

Choosing the Right Golf Instructor to Achieve Your Goals
To learn golf effectively, reach your goals, lower your scores on the course, or even master a lob shot over a bunker that will impress your friends, it is essential to train with a good coach.
As an experienced golf instructor, I am confident in my ability to help you, as I have already done with hundreds of golfers.
For me, it’s crucial to maintain a direct link to practical play, as it allows me to preserve the living and dynamic aspect of teaching. This is why, beyond teaching golf, I continue to play, practice, and participate in golf tournaments. This personal involvement ensures I stay up to date and can offer advice based on real, current experience.
This approach allows me to:
- Demonstrate what I aim to teach,
- Avoid getting lost in theoretical concepts,
- Coach with concrete, proven techniques that work today on the course.
My continuous education in diverse fields, such as team sports, psychology, pedagogy, and martial arts, provides me with a deeper understanding of human movement. This enables me to observe a player’s gestures more closely and offer simple, personalized connections that will facilitate your progress in golf.
Thanks to this broad knowledge, I can create bridges between different disciplines and golf, making advice more accessible and easier to apply.
Additionally, studying cognitive biases and psychology allows me to guide students in avoiding common pitfalls that often waste valuable time. Golf is a game where failure is part of the process, and it’s easy to misinterpret a miss-hit.
I always make sure the student understands the task they need to accomplish, so they don’t fall into incorrect interpretations that would slow their progress. It might seem like a small detail, but I assure you, it is a fundamental pillar of success.
In Summary
There is always something new to learn in golf, even if you’ve reached an intermediate level.
I would even say that especially when you’ve reached the intermediate level, this is where the real work begins.
To continue progressing in golf and break through new levels, you probably need the guidance of a golf instructor who can identify your stagnation points and show you how to overcome them.
